DJ Rockaway Rocks the House

I love to dance. I just HAVE to dance! And DJ Rockaway is the DJ that keeps me dancing. She stepped up to DJ our big Epochalips party for Nicole Conn’s movie premiere of ‘A Perfect Ending’ last year at Frameline. She got me to jump in the pool TWICE (with most of my clothes on) during Olivia’s 40th Anniversary cruise to the Caribbean. And she got all my friends dancing at my birthday party at ‘Play’ in February. Here she is: DJ Rockaway, The Epochalips Interview:
How did you get started as a DJ?
I’ve been DJ’ing for over a decade. I was born and raised in NY, and all my life I have loved music. I absolutley love to dance. I dance in my car. I dance walking down the street. I dance in the middle of the grocery store aisles. One day I just woke up and said, “I want to be a DJ”. I knew it was in my blood. I knew I wanted to share my love for music with others and what better way to do so than to DJ. So I went out and bought DJ gear. I taught myself everything from A-Z and the rest is history.
What brought you to SF from NY?
I found the love of my life while being a DJ on Olivia vacations. Some of your readers might know her. She’s known as ‘the voice’ and one of the ‘faces of Olivia’ – Vice President of Olivia, Tisha Floratos. She is what brought me to The Bay Area.
I’m jealous of your amazing man shoe collection, where do you shop?
Ah Thanks Robin! It’s true. I do have quite the shoe collection. I shop anywhere and everywhere. But I just got a tip on a new shoe store on Hayes – it’s called Gimme Shoes. They have some great finds!
You have one of the cutest girlfriends around…How did you two meet?
Tisha and I met in 2004 in Ixtapa, Mexico. I was a guest on an Olivia vacation. I gave her my business card hoping that Olivia would hire me as a DJ. Sure enough they did. We became great friends but it wasn’t until years later that we fell madly in love with each other. I proposed to her in 2009 and we’re hoping to get married and start a family soon!

Oh boy that’s a tough one! Of course I have to say PLAY and Olivia Vacations! There are quite a few others though.
Your celebrity crush: Rihanna Rihanna Rihanna!
What is ‘Play’ all about?
Pure and simple – my parties are for women (all ages, all flavors) who love to dance. They dance from the time they walk in the door until it’s time to leave!
What are your future plans for these fun events?
I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for the women who come out and support PLAY every month. My hope is to see PLAY continue to grow. I want women to spread the word and come out and PLAY with me…DJ Rockaway!
